Horizontal Cylindrical Vessel Volume

Calculate liquid volume and fill percentage in the straight cylindrical shell of a level horizontal vessel from internal diameter, shell length and liquid depth.

Straight-shell geometry

The vessel axis is assumed horizontal and level.

Must be between 0 and the internal diameter.

Operational geometry

Estimate liquid inventory from level.

Useful for understanding liquid holdup in a horizontal cylindrical separator or tank when the straight-shell geometry is known.

Calculation basis

A = r² cos⁻¹((r − h)/r) − (r − h)√(2rh − h²)
V = A × L

Scope: level horizontal straight cylindrical shell only.

Ellipsoidal, hemispherical or dished heads are excluded, as are weirs, inlet devices, mist extractors, piping/nozzle intrusion and other internal displacement. Do not use this result as a certified vessel calibration table or separator design volume without including the actual vessel geometry and internals.
